Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld

DVB-H

DVB-H is gaining a very strong position, especially in Europe. TV or radio are transmitted over the DVB-H in IP format (Internet Protocol), generally referred to as IPDC technology (IP Datacasting). IPDC complements the mobile phone network by adding significantly increased transmission capacity, but still one-way and timed. This technology enables the provision of high quality TV-type services and in the longer perspective, the transfer of various software products.

User identification, subscription and invoicing functions, decoding of encrypted data and interactive services require the use of a separate return channel, i.e. the mobile phone network. Mobile phone operators have a natural role as providers of the return channel and in management of invoicing activities. However, it is also be important to search for additional services that would give access to innovative new incoming channels and would also complement the existing mobile products.

The nationally operating TV channels will feature strongly among the programmes offered on mobile TV, but it can also be expected that numerous payable international and foreign channels will be available.

The potential target group of IPDC and mobile TV services is many times that of former mobile phone services, as this media channel is particularly suitable for offering consumers services with a richer content than before at a reasonable price.
