DINA IST Mobile DVB-H project implemented in cooperation with the Finnish Mobile TV project arouses wide interest at IST 2006 event
At the IST 2006 event held on 21—23.11.2006 in Helsinki, Arcada Polytechnic presented new and unique programme formats for mobile television. Cooperating with FVH’s Finnish Mobile TV project and Elisa, Arcada carried through an experimental broadcast produced especially for mobile television.
- The greatest challenge of Mobile TV is to provide content that attracts the client and provides added value, says the leader of the project, TV director Tommy Mård of Arcada. He is responsible for the school’s mobile television project and heads TV directing activities within the project.
The DINA channel mobile television project consisted of multimedial services that were offered for different user terminal devices during the IST 2006 Conference organised by the EU Commission last week. The mobile TV channel offered interactive video blogs, media art, tips on leisure activities, music, reportages produced in advance — and above all — direct broadcasts recorded with and receivable with a mobile phone. The programme palette was tailored primarily to serve foreign visitors to the fair.
The competition was part of the conference organised by the Cross-Media Customer Oriented Models (INCCOM) organisation presenting possible future mobile solutions.
The INCCOM jury consisted of top ranking media concept experts: Jarmo Eskelinen (Forum Virium Helsinki), Asko Marttila (INCCOM), Wilfried Runde (Deutsche Welle), Jochen Spangenberg (Deutsche Welle), Jarmo Suominen (Massachusetts Institute of Technology / University of Art and Design Helsinki).
- The mobile television range of programmes we provided at the IST 2006 fair gave a taste of things to come. The point of departure was that mobile television would offer something other than conventional TV channels. I personally believe that mobile TV will make a breakthrough with buffs and fans in different fields of activity, big time sports and news consumers, says researcher Tuulikki Haaranen of Arcada.
- The first experiences of mobile television broadcasts have proved that a relaxed attitude and spontaneity play a key role in production, says Tiina Räisä, the manager of the DINA channel from Arcada, who also provided her own video blog on mobile TV during the IST event.
Thanks to the DINA channel launched in February 2006, Arcada became the national centre for mobile television development and training. The DINA channel is a forum of cooperation for Arcada, the internet service provider Welho, the University of Art and Design Helsinki, Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia, Tampere Polytechnic and the Turku University of Applied Science. The mobile TV broadcasts seen at the IST 2006 event were created from start to finish by Arcada staff and students of the DINA network.
The principal partners in the Dina IST Mobile project were Forum Virium Helsinki and its Finnish Mobile TV project, Elisa and Digita.
